As one of Calgary’s most dedicated personal injury and medical malpractice law firms, the team here at Cuming & Gillespie LLP knows all too well just how traumatic and life-changing brain injuries can be. While many types of injuries are quite serious and can have an enormous impact on your life, your health, and your family, the effects of brain injuries are unique. Though often invisible on the surface, brain injuries can significantly impact motor function, cognition and mental ability, mood and emotion, and even personality.
There’s no such thing as a “minor” brain injury. All injuries to the brain are serious, and have the potential to cause life long changes. In fact, we’re only now becoming aware of the full impact that brain injuries—even what were once considered “mild” concussions—have on future capabilities and health. Some of the most cutting-edge research into brain injuries is being conducted right here in Calgary, and Cuming & Gillespie LLP is proud to be a part of a community so dedicated to brain injury victims and brain injury prevention.
We’ve been directly involved in this community both in our day-to-day work as personal injury lawyers here in Calgary, and as one of the founding partners of the Brain Injury Patient Experience Program at Calgary Foothills Hospital . We also try to stay up to date on all of the latest treatments for brain injuries and the best brain injury prevention guidelines for those engaged in high-risk activities. Two recent items caught our attention in this regard.
We thought we’d take a moment to share them with you.
Calgary Doctor Claims Success With Controversial Brain Injury Treatment
Our experience as Calgary medical malpractice lawyers means we would never recommend anyone subject themselves to a medical procedure that hasn’t been accepted as safe and effective by the majority of them medical community. At the same time, we also recognize that new and revolutionary treatments have to start somewhere. One Calgary doctor and researcher claims to have successfully treated some symptoms of certain brain injuries using a procedure that is not yet widely adopted in Canada but that, according to the doctor, is already in broad use in the United States and has been well-documented in medical research.
The technique uses brain imaging and biofeedback to identify areas of the brain that have become over- or under-stimulated following a brain injury and cause symptoms including headaches, depression, and other mood and cognition problems. Patients wear a cap that images these areas, then introduces a mild electric charge to targeted areas of the brain to affect activity levels. Several high-profile patients from the NHL swear the procedure has helped them overcome symptoms they suffered after multiple concussions in their careers.
Brain Injury Victims Need Medical AND Legal Help
Again, we don’t recommend anyone seek treatment without the full approval of their medical team and a complete understanding of the risks involved. It’s encouraging to see new treatments being tested, however, and we’re excited that the Calgary medical community is leading the charge for brain injury victims.
