Our work as plaintiff-only personal injury lawyers means we often see Calgary-area citizens at some of the lowest points in their lives. The impact that a serious brain injury can have on your life, your family, and your career is easy to underestimate, but when it happens to you or someone you love it can seem like too much to overcome. Lost capabilities, lost work, months or even years spent seeing medical specialists, undergoing extensive surgeries and other procedures—it all adds stress and eats up time and money.
By helping our clients get the compensation they need and deserve to meet this struggle head on, we also get to witness first-hand many of the triumphs and successes injury victims can achieve. Due to our special interest in brain and spinal cord injuries, we’re especially elated when anyone in Calgary is able to beat the odds against these life-altering and frequently debilitating injuries. When the injury victim is a child, with his or her whole life ahead, these victories are an even more heart-warming reminder of why we’ve dedicated our Calgary law practice to helping Calgary’s injured.
“Not Pre-Accident,” But Better Than Calgary’s Best Predicted
As reported by Global News, this March marked a year since an eight year old boy was hit by a truck while crossing a road, walking back to his Calgary home from his nearby piano lesson. In a coma and suffering from severe brain trauma amongst other injuries, his parents were told the prognosis was grim: at best, significantly reduced brain function leaving him wheelchair bound and largely helpless.
Now nine, this brain injury survivor is not only walking, he’s happily attending school where he continues to need less and less assistance. He goes rock climbing, skates, and has already recovered far more than some of Calgary’s leading medical professionals thought he ever would—and he’s still getting better.
“We’re not pre-accident,” said the boy’s mother. “He is living life and he’s happy. He’s in school and he’s doing really well academically.”
Not only is he recovering, but his Calgary neighborhood has been made safer due to the public awareness this accident created. A new four-way stop at the intersection where the accident occurred has been installed, and residents of the area are all keenly aware of the need for care while driving on residential streets and on all of Calgary’s roads and highways.
Protecting Calgary Brain Injury Victims’ Legal Rights
Even with such a valiant recovery, this boy and his family have undoubtedly met with extreme hardships due to the accident that caused his injuries. Like all accident victims in Calgary, he and his family have legal rights that need to be protected. Both the financial and the emotional costs of brain injuries, spinal injuries, and other serious injuries can be enormous, and no one should have to bear those costs as a result of someone else’s negligence.
