At Cuming & Gillespie LLP, one of Calgary’s leading personal injury law firms, our legal team is dedicated to making sure everyone in Calgary has the information and access to representation they need in order to protect their rights and interests when they’ve been injured. We’ve seen the devastating consequences serious injuries can have on individuals and families, and we know how hard it can be to deal with mounting medical bills, lost earnings, limited capabilities, and ongoing pain and debilitation.

We also know that no settlement can actually make up for a serious injury—if our clients could go back to not being injured in the first place, every single one of them would leap at the chance. That’s why we also try to provide information on the best ways to keep you and your family safe and free from serious harm. We are happy to serve any and all injury victims in the Greater Calgary Area, but we would be even happier in a world where serious injuries didn’t occur at all.

Such a world will probably never exist, but there are some simple things you can do to greatly reduce your risk of serious injury during certain activities. Like cycling, for instance. A favorite past time and means of transportation for many Calgarians, riding a bike is a great way to get exercise, to get from A to B, and to have some fun outdoors. Unfortunately, bicycles can also be dangerous vehicles, as even a minor accident can lead to a serious head injury, resulting in brain trauma and even death.

Fortunately, there is an easy fix that greatly reduces this risk.

More Calgarians Should Be Wearing Bike Helmets

According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, only 42% of Canadians over the age of twelve always wore a helmet while riding a bicycle, and among adults 20 to 34 years of age, 46% reported never wearing a helmet on a bicycle. This is alarming when you consider how much safer a bike helmet makes you.

“We know that we have compelling evidence for a strong benefit of helmet use to protect against head injuries,” says Brent Hagel of Alberta Children’s Hospital, who reports that bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by 70%. “That benefit really goes across all age groups and a variety of crash circumstances.”

The numbers are clear: buckling that helmet before taking off on your bicycle is a great way to reduce your risk of head injury, and makes bicycling a much safer activity—and that makes it all the more fun, if you ask us.
