Any serious injury can have a significant impact on your future plans and goals, your day-to-day life, your family, your career, and more. As one of Calgary’s leading personal injury law firms, we work with injury victims and their families every day, and we see the consequence of their injuries all too clearly. Yet even amongst all of the serious injuries we see, some stand out for the particularly devastating consequences.
Spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries are frequently among these unfortunate stand-outs. Few injuries have the potential to be more debilitating; from losing the use of limbs and the control of other bodily functions to personality changes, memory loss, and other mental disabilities, these injuries can cause extreme differences in day-to-day capabilities and future outcomes.
Recently, a well-known Calgary personality found herself making headlines again due to a traumatic brain injury she suffered nearly two years ago. Her case is an example of how serious brain injuries can be.
Calling Dunk Tank Unsafe, Calgary Personality Files Injury Lawsuit
The personal injury lawyers at Cuming & Gillespie LLP are not involved in this case, and we cannot comment on the merits of the claims made or the legal particulars. According to statements made in the suit filed and as reported in the Calgary Herald, Leslie Horton—a long-time traffic reporter for Global TV in Calgary—participated in a “dunk tank” event in which she struck her head on an unpadded protrusion. Since that incident, according to Horton’s claim, she has suffered from memory loss and difficulty concentrating and is undergoing continuing rehabilitative therapy in an attempt to regain function.
These claims show that even a seemingly minor head impact can cause a traumatic brain injury with lasting effects. Any trauma to the head can lead to lasting changes in cognition and mental ability, in addition to other emotional, psychological, and neurological problems. The impact this has on one’s career and earning potential can be extreme, and can also have an enormous impact on the brain injury victim’s relationships. When such an injury is caused by a preventable accident—by someone’s negligence or lack of care in a risky situation—the injury victim has the right to seek justice for having their lives so needlessly disrupted.
