In another tragic accident that could have been prevented, two people have lost their lives and one remains critically injured following a single-vehicle rollover accident in which alcohol played a role, according to Calgary-area law enforcement.
The accident occurred on April 5th on Township Road 340, north of Sundre, when a pickup truck carrying four passengers apparently left the road and rolled several times. Paramedics from Sundre, Disbury, and Caroline responded to reports of the accident, as did a STARS Air Ambulance; the driver was discovered unconscious still inside the pickup, and a front passenger had been thrown from the vehicle.
That passenger is still recovering in a hospital after suffering extensive injuries. Two passengers in the rear were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Only now, however, has the RCMP released the results of their investigation, citing both speed and alcohol use as lying at the root of this accident. The driver faces 12 criminal charges including alcohol impairment, dangerous driving, and criminal negligence. The driver’s negligence also leaves her liable for civil lawsuits from the injured passenger and from the families of the passengers killed in the accident.
This should serve as a reminder to all drivers and passengers throughout Alberta: don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking, and don’t get in the car with an intoxicated driver.
