Here at Cuming & Gillespie LLP, Calgary’s premier personal injury law firm, we help people with spinal injuries and nerve damage every day. We even partnered with Foothills Hospital and the Calgary Health Trust to create the Brain Injury Patient Experience Program, which helps Calgary-area patients suffering from injuries to their central nervous system (including spinal injuries) better adjust to life following their accidents, and which also aims to better understand how these injuries affect individuals.
There’s no question that spinal injuries and other damage to the nervous system can be devastating and life changing, no matter what the source of the trauma. Car accidents, slip-and-fall injuries, and other mishaps can lead to reduced muscle function, reduced sensation, paralysis including paraplegia and quadriplegia, and can affect the functioning of internal organs, as well. In short, a spinal injury can change one’s ability to control their body in whole or in part, limiting their ability to lead a full, normal, and productive life in ways that range from the obvious to the subtle.
It’s an outcome no one should have to face, and far less so when their injuries are caused by someone else’s negligence or carelessness.
Our constant awareness of the often-irreversible problems caused by spinal injuries and nerve damage means we also keep our eyes on medical developments that can assist our clients and other spinal injury patients. That’s why we were very excited to see a recent headline detailing a technological advancement that could revolutionize the way nervous system injuries are treated, and that could lead to more complete recoveries for many spinal injury victims.
3D printers are at the forefront of innovation in many areas, including medicine. Most recently, a group of researchers from several US universities “printed” a silicone map of a complex nerve, which included certain chemical markers meant to help encourage nerve regeneration. Implanting this in a rat whose sciatic nerve had been removed enabled the nerve to regrow and restore both sensory and motor function—a major breakthrough in nerve repair.
Human trials are still a long way off, and making this treatment readily available in hospitals will take even longer, but this study is an exciting step towards a world where spinal injuries and nervous system damage don’t have to be life sentences. There’s nothing we’d like more than to be able to tell every spinal cord and nerve injury victim who walks into our office that they can expect a full and complete recovery once they receive the proper care, and it looks like that day is finally on the horizon.
