Calgary police are still investigating an accident that occurred on Erin Woods Boulevard at Erin Dale Crescent SE at approximately 8:25am Friday, September 18.

A 16 year-old male, whose name has not been released, was crossing Erin Woods Boulevard when he was struck by a 2006 Mitsubishi Endeavor travelling east along the road. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 30 year-old male, has not been charged with any crime. Police say that there is no reason to suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, and the driver does not appear to have been speeding, either.

Instead, the initial investigation suggests that the morning sunlight disrupted the driver’s vision, and that he did not see the pedestrian before the accident occurred.

While no criminal charges or traffic infractions are currently pending, the driver could face a civil claim for wrongful death should the victim’s family choose to pursue this course of action.

This accident should serve as a reminder to all drivers in Calgary that simply obeying the law isn’t always enough to keep everyone safe—maintaining awareness and responding to changes in visibility is of extreme importance, and truly is a life or death issue.
